Spring 2019 Trips

Please note that the registration deadline is the Wednesday before the trip leaves at 5 pm. Trips are subject to change so check back often for updates.

Tunica Falls Hike
Tunica Falls hosts some of the most scenic and beautiful hikes accessible by day trip from New Orleans. Compared to the rest of the region, Tunica Falls is topographically unique, and is considered to be the closest you can get to canyoneering in the south. Comprising over 2,000 acres, this pristine area has over 40 waterfalls that range from 10 to over 25 ft. high. We’ll hike along the riverbed, spend some time cooling off in the falls, and eat lunch on the trail. Trip cost includes food, transportation, and leadership.

Clear Springs Day Hike
Join Tulane Outdoor Adventures on a beautiful scenic hike through Homochitto National Forest starting at the Clear Springs campground. Clear Springs has over 20 miles of trails for hiking, and there is a new site around every corner as the area features three different characteristics as you travel east to west: the forest shifts from various pine trees to hardwoods and then a combination of the two based on the topography of the area. Trip cost includes food, transportation, and leadership.

Bayou St. John Paddle
Canoeing is one of the best forms of transportation in the Louisiana swampland and is now a popular form of recreation. We’ll give it a whirl on the waters of Bayou St. John. Come prepared to get a little wet and have a lot of fun. Cost includes transportation, leadership, and all equipment.

Alabama Rock Climbing
Join Tulane Outdoor Adventures for an exciting and relaxing weekend away from campus. We will spend two days climbing unique sandstone pinnacles in the Sandrock area of northern Alabama! Expect to sleep outside, cook on a camp-stove, and have fun. There is no experience necessary for this trip! Cost includes transportation, meals, equipment, and activity fees.

Women's Backpacking
This trip is designed as a wilderness retreat for women and femme-identifying students. The goal of this trip is to create a safe and empowering environment for women to explore outdoor recreation and to have a space to talk openly about women’s issues. The trip will be a mix of hiking, swimming, relaxing, and discussion. With the input of participants, the trip leaders will design facilitated discussion focused on womanhood, intersectionality, mental health, leadership, and experiences in the outdoors—all through a feminist lens.

Fontainebleau Day Hike
We will be hiking at Fontainebleau State Park located on the North Shore of Lake Pontchartrain! We will hike around for a few hours to explore this beautiful area. You will see many interesting plants and animals on our hike along Bayou Cane including cypress and gum trees, snakes, birds, and maybe even an alligator. Cost includes transportation, entry fees, and leadership.

Sunset Canoe
Join Outdoor Adventures for a paddle down the Cane Bayou at sunset. Under the sky's gradient of bursting color, we will voyage through Southern Louisiana's wild wetlands to Lake Pontchartrain. What's a better way to spend a weekend than with a sunset over a lake, numerous bird species, and, perhaps, an alligator or two? Cost includes transportation, equipment, and snacks!

Spring Break Backpacking
Spring break isn't just a break from class, but a retreat from the rush of college life in a big city. Challenging but rewarding, backpacking will teach you to live minimally, pack essentials into a single bag, cook tasty food, and live life on a trail. We will rise with the sun and fall asleep under the stars, hiking, cooking, and bonding in between. During this trip we will hike the beautiful Eagle-Rock Loop through Arkansas' Ouachita national forest. This challenging trail winds through the scenic mountains of western Arkansas and will be accompanied by food breaks and, perhaps, a few hours hanging or swimming at the waterhole–a perfect end to a long day of hiking. Backpackers must be physically fit and provide their own footwear (sturdy hiking boots). Trip cost includes transportation, backcountry meals, equipment, instruction, and leadership.

Spring Break Beach Camping
Spend your spring break relaxing on the beach with TU Rec Outdoor Adventures! We will travel to the Florida panhandle where we will camp right on the sand, hike along a beautiful gulf shore barrier island, relax on the beach, and try stand-up paddleboarding. Trip cost includes food, transportation, activity fees, equipment, and leadership.

Moonlight Canoe
Join us for a paddle by moonlight on the historic Bayou St. John. We will paddle through New Orleans with only the full moon as our light. Cost includes transportation, equipment, and leadership.

Wellness Retreat
Take some time outside to relax your body and mind with Outdoor Adventures! We will camp, hike, do yoga, and go paddleboarding in Fontainebleau State Park on the North Shore of Lake Ponchartrain. All equipment and food will be provided.

Stand Up Paddleboard 101
This sport's origins stem from Hawaii; however, it certainly has caught on here on the Mainland. Paddleboarding combines balance and strength to create a truly unique form of transportation and, of course, recreation. We'll give it a whirl on the waters of historic Bayou St. John–great for both its natural beauty and iconic New Orleans views. Cost includes transportation, leadership, and equipment.

Okatoma Kayak and Camp
Join us for an awesome overnight Kayak trip in Mississippi’s beautiful Okatoma Creek! We will explore the area on kayaks, cook dinner, camp, and return to campus on Sunday. Cost includes transportation, food, equipment, instruction, and leadership.

Wilderness First Aid
The NOLS Wilderness First Aid (WFA) course will help you prepare for the unexpected. This fast paced, hands-on training is designed to meet the needs of trip leaders, camp staff, outdoor enthusiasts and individuals working in remote locations. It will introduce you to caring for people who become ill or injured far from definitive medical care. Classroom lectures and demonstrations are combined with realistic scenarios where mock patients will challenge you to integrate your learning. At the end of the course, you'll have the knowledge, skills and ability to make sound decisions in emergency situations.

Beach Camping
Join TU Rec Outdoor Adventures for our popular beach camping adventure to Grand Isle. We will camp right on the sand, hike along a beautiful gulf shore barrier island, relax on the beach, and try stand-up paddleboarding. Trip cost includes food, transportation, activity fees, equipment, and leadership.

Ocean Stand Up Paddleboarding
This sport's origins stem from Hawaii; however, it certainly has caught on here on the Mainland. Paddleboarding combines balance and strength to create a truly unique form of transportation and, of course, recreation. Paddleboarding has gained momentum as one of the hottest sports in the country. We will head down to Bay St. Louis and try it out in the Gulf of Mexico. There will be plenty of time for paddling, laying in the sun, and enjoying the day. Cost includes transportation, equipment, and lunch.

Tubing!
Join us for a relaxing float down the picturesque Bogue Chitto River! Drift along the banks, and take in the natural beauty that the south has to offer, while the current effortlessly carries you through this beautiful and remote feeling section of southern Mississippi. Trip includes transportation, tubes, and lunch.

Easter Break Canoeing
Easter Break Canoeing will explore DeSoto National Forest by river! On this trip participants will get a chance to try their hand at paddling and learn how to paddle in DeSoto National Forest. This area is known for its beautiful landscapes and fantastic sunsets. There is always a chance for late night s’mores on a sandbar or a bonfire while gazing at the stars.

Easter Break Rock Climbing
Join us for an exciting and relaxing weekend away from campus! We will depart Friday afternoon, climb all day Saturday and Sunday morning, and drive home Monday afternoon. You should expect tent camping, outdoor cooking, and some incredible climbing. Climbers of all skill levels are welcome, especially beginners. Cost includes transportation, meals, equipment, and activity fees.

Date: Friday April 19 - Monday April 22
Time: Overnight – departing Friday afternoon, returning Sunday afternoon

General Trip Information

  • Trips are open to Tulane students only (undergraduate, graduate, medical, and law).
  • No alcohol, drugs, or other substances are permitted on trips.
  • Students must abide by the Student Code of Conduct
  • Attendance at the pre-trip meeting (usually the Wednesday before the trip) is mandatory.
  • Ask any questions you might have about your ability to participate in trip activities before you register. While our trips are geared towards beginners, it is up to you to estimate your physical abilities in advance.
  • Trip sign-up is available on a first-come, first-serve basis.
  • Full payment is due at the time of registration.
  • Proof of health insurance is required before trip begins.

Refund Information

  • I understand that by registering for a trip, I am committed to attend.
  • If the trip is canceled by Tulane Reily Student Recreation Center, I will receive a 100% refund.
  • I understand that if I cancel my registration anytime prior to the pre-trip meeting, I will receive a 50% refund of the registration cost.
  • If I cancel after the pre-trip meeting and my spot can not be filled I will not receive a refund.
  • Attendance at the pre-trip meeting is mandatory. Those who do not attend may not be able to attend the trip and may not be given a refund.
